In a collection of inspirational, heartbreaking, and comical short stories, author Kevin Finch takes readers on a journey through life in a small town in Central America. El Paraíso sits nestled in the mountains of southeast Honduras, one of the world’s most impoverished countries. Although its name means “paradise," the town is a place of extreme poverty where people struggle daily against incredible hardships. In 2004, newlyweds Kevin and Cristina Finch embark upon a two-year adventure as Peace Corps Volunteers in El Paraíso. Assigned to counter the growing AIDS epidemic gripping the country as well as work with community leaders to tackle other challenges, Kevin and Cristina arrive full of hope and optimism. The harsh realities of life in El Paraíso quickly mount, and the couple finds themselves frustrated, discouraged, and angry. Just as they are ready to give up, strange changes begin to transpire. Is El Paraíso a hopeless place or a town like any other with an unexpected lesson to teach? Through a variety of remarkable characters, humorous events, and life-changing experiences, Paradise in Front of Me describes a surprising journey that captures life’s beauty in extraordinary ways. It is the story of how lives can be transformed when individuals change the way they view their world. Perhaps paradise does exist where one least expects.

This is a first-hand account of the adventures of a Peace Corps volunteer and his wife, who were sent to the the wilds of Honduras. It's an easy read, with many short and poignant chapters. Paradise in Front of Me Realizing Life Beauty in an Unexpected Place eBook Kevin Finch Reviews

The recurring image in Kevin G. Finch’s Paradise in Front of Me is that of an impoverished Honduran child looking up at a locked schoolhouse door. Shut out again. The author and the residents of El Paraíso repeatedly find their plans scuttled by naked madmen in San Juan, cancelled classes in Monte Cristo, failed transportation to Cuyalí, striking teachers, impassable rivers, traveling gringo evangelicals . . . there’s no end to the obstacles in this Honduran state near the border with Nicaragua. “The teachers are on strike,” Finch writes towards the end, “and another day is wasted in the future of Honduras. The child blinks his eyes to bat away the drops of rain running down from his soaked hair. He looks left and then right. Slumping his shoulders, he heads for home, his empty notebook in hand.”

This forlorn image is exactly what makes the collection of vignettes so uplifting at its close. Read more at http//benonbooks.wordpress.com/review-honduras-paradise-in-front-of-me/
An easy to read journal! You really begin to feel Kevin and Christina's joys and despairs along their Honduran trek.
This was very well written! Had me laughing out loud at some parts and almost crying at others. Definitely worth reading!
Just like the tour of peace corps, the book got better, the longer I read it!
I feel as if I know the town.
The book manages to convey the frustrating economic and cultural difficulties faced by an impoverished community in Honduras, as well as the beauty of the local residents that overcome those hardships. It is an unflinching indictment of the educational system in Honduras, but also a paean to the people that are burdened by it and those striving to change it. The author brings refreshing honesty, humility and humor to the always entertaining vignettes. Thanks to him not just for the book but also for his invaluable work while in Honduras.
Loved reading this book. It made me think of how much volunteers really and truly give to the country they are assigned when joining the Peace Corps. It also gave me much to ponder on how we live our lives here in the United States and how much we really have to be thankful about.

A great entertaining read. We all hear about the Peace Corp but know very little about their actual journeys. Kevin tells it how it is. Funny, sad, at times hopeless and other times inspiring. The read was really fun because he put together about 50 short stories about special days or special people or humerous incidents that seemed to bother him and Christina less and less as became used to the culture in Honduras. Since you could read the book in ten minute spurts it was a great "toilet book". My wife wondered if I was was having a bowel problem when I spent an inordinate amount of time in the bathroom. Just had trouble putting it down.
